IUP Studio Bass Ensemble

Since 2002, Nathan has been the Professor of Bass Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. As an educator, a primary objective of his has been to foster a well-rounded experience which includes the exposure to different styles, techniques, innovators, and repertoire to enable students to enter the music field prepared to perform in any circumstance.

To this end also, he has formed the IUP Studio Bass Ensemble enabling these students to experience the bass in non-traditional roles. Repertoire has placed the performers into duets, trios, and quartets on acoustic and electric instruments.

The group has regularly performed in the IUP String Ensemble concerts. It has also visited regional schools demonstrating the bass and its musical possibilities.

On November 18th, 2008, the group presented a formal recital in Cogswell Music Building. The concert featured current and former members of the ensemble as well as a guest appearance by IUP violin professor, Dr. Stanley Chepaitis on electric 5-string violin. Featured performers are Mike Majurski, Kevin Huhn, Chris Conte, Andrew Gorenz, Tony Grande, and director Nathan Santos.

In April 2010, Nathan presented a clinic entitled "The Versatile Bass" at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Annual Conference in Pittsburgh. The clinic featured the IUP Studio Bass Ensemble demonstrating various techniques and styles. Ensemble members included Kevin Huhn, Tony Grande, and Brennan Proud. Pictures can be viewed below.
